Organic quality

Organic quality We manufacture organic (German: BIO) products, not because we have to, but because we want to. In the EU, only products that meet the binding minimum standards under EU regulations on organic production (organic certification) may be called 'organic.' In Germany, compliance with these regulations has been indicated since 2001 by the hexagonal BIO seal which can be seen on many products both in the conventional food retail trade and in the organic food trade. It verifies for consumers that the products are from organic farming. The packaging of every product with the BIO seal must bear the code number of the inspection body, for example DE-Öko-001. This gives consumers the certainty that a product claiming to be ‘bio‘ or ‘organic‘ actually is.

The introduction of the EU regulations on organic production set clear standards for organic products

  • avoidance of synthetic chemical pesticides and fertilisers
  • varied crop rotation systems
  • maintenance or improvement of soil fertility
  • balanced nutrient cycles through acreage-dependent animal husbandry
  • humane animal husbandry with adequate space for livestock
  • maintenance of the health of animals by strengthening their natural resistance
  • ban on the use of genetic engineering
  • sustained farming methods to maintain soil fertility for future generations
  • ban on food irradiation and
  • reduction in the use of additives and processing agents
  • All this means that organic farming and processing differs considerably from the methods used in conventional agriculture and the food industry.
